The Power of the Comma

September 1, 2014

Here’s some Labor Day fun! Did you know that a simple comma can change the entire meaning of a sentence? Let us show you:

A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.

Let’s eat Dad!
Let’s eat, Dad!

I really enjoy cooking my family and my dogs.
I really enjoy cooking, my family, and my dogs.

Man meat is my favorite food!
Man, meat is my favorite food!

I don’t like this orange dude.
I don’t like this orange, dude.

I have a few hours to kill someone, come over!
I have a few hours to kill, someone come over!

The Oxford comma can make a big difference as well:

We invited the clowns, Bill Gates, and Matt Damon.
We invited the clowns, Bill Gates and Matt Damon.

These humorous mistakes seem to happen the most in Facebook posts or news headlines. Have any more to share? Let us know on Facebook!
